Self-Assessment
Throughout this semester I have learned valuable skills to help improve my writing. In this course we learned the values of musical theater. As we look at how we communicate in our society we see values in what we see with our eyes and what we hear with our ears and what we feel with our hearts. Diving into the West Side Story as well as other plays we have watched on our own it was clear to see me impact the importance of a play by the images displayed, the music that was produced and more .With that we identify rhetorical situations and tools that helped us understand the play writers point as well helped us with our own writing when explaining the meaning of these musical theaters. With specific word choice and rhetorical strategies I was able to understand Musical productions like the Wet Side Story. Not only did we learn about the values of what the music in these plays play a part of, we learned what the characters mean as well, and many more important facts like, the meaning of the plot, or why the colors a character is wearing so significant.
The most important learning moment this semester was knowing how to tell my first experience with a play. As a vague person this allowed me to understand that specific words help readers capture what you are trying to say through the idea of imagery based on word choice. For example, in my aesthetic essay I stated “As the lights dimmed and the iconic opening chords of “Circle of Life” filled the theater, any doubts I had vanished. From the elaborate costumes to the mesmerizing puppetry, every aspect of the production was a feast for the senses.” There is much importance when it comes to our word choice so that we can provide a well thought picture in our audiences minds.
Gathering evidence was important because I know how to use my sources and allow them to make my argument or point stronger. When it comes to sources, especially when writing a research paper it is important to have reliable sources. To identify reliable sources we must look at the publishing credibility and the author’s credibility. Not only do we look at the credibility, we look at its relevance to your topic.I was able to locate research sources including wikipedia and newspaper articles in the library database or archives an on the internet , I was also able to compose text that integrated a stance with appropriate sources through strategies like summary analysis, etc. For example, in my paper about The West Side Story I integrated this piece of evidence While the Civil Rights Movement and the Feminist Movement gained popularity, “West Side Story” offered a compelling storyline and an effective platform for discussing these important social issues. The 1950s saw a great deal of social and cultural transformation in America. World War II brought about suburbanization, a rise in consumer culture, and economic success. (Scott, 2021).. I feel that I accomplish integrating and examining my evidence well.
Explore and analyze in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations. This basically means that there are many genres and ways other people are right to tell a story and get a point across, in class we identified these aspects by t identifying what the genre is overall. For example, “Winter Light” by Ingmar Bergman “The genre was a play. Which discusses the concept of self-reflection as a means of confronting the complexities of human existence. By identifying the genre I was able to break apart what makes up the author’s writing like the genre to understand it better.
Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising and editing. I did this while doing my essays. When revising I went over each paragraph and pulled out what I wanted to say about them in my head to help revise. This also helped with drafting my essays .
Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations. When I write my aesthetic essay and write in specific ways to engage and make the audience understand. We can recognize rhetorical strategies unveiling what the authors.
Overall, this semester I have gained a lot of knowledge about my writing and how to improve it in my future endeavors.
