My Journey with the Lion King

As a child, I was never particularly drawn to musicals. My exposure to the arts was limited, and the idea of characters bursting into song and dance seemed too fantastical for me to fully grasp. However, everything changed when I experienced my first significant musical – The Lion King. This life-changing experience not only opened my eyes to the wonders of musical theater but also permanently altered the way I perceive culture, storytelling, and the expressive power of song.Growing up, Disney’s The Lion King was a staple in my household. I had watched the animated film countless times, mesmerized by the vibrant animation and timeless story of Simba’s journey to reclaim his rightful place as king. So when the opportunity arose to see the stage adaptation of The Lion King, I was both excited and skeptical. How could a live performance capture the essence of such a beloved movie? How could they depict such a detailed story into something live?

As the lights dimmed and the iconic opening chords of “Circle of Life” filled the theater, any doubts I had vanished. From the elaborate costumes to the mesmerizing puppetry, every aspect of the production was a feast for the senses. As I watched Simba’s journey unfold onstage, I found myself completely immersed in the world of the Pride Lands, swept away by the emotion and energy of the performers.

But the underlying concepts of identity, accountability, and redemption struck a deep chord with me more than the production’s visual splendor. Witnessing Simba struggle with his previous transgressions and eventually the bravery to face his anxieties served as a potent reminder of how important it is to face our own demons and embrace our true selves.

Upon reflection, I realize that my initial experience with The Lion King was only the beginning of my journey with this musical. rewatching it, I was struck by the layers of symbolism  that I hadn’t fully appreciated before. Moments that had once seemed simple and straightforward now revealed deeper meanings, thanks to a newfound understanding of the creative process and the intricate choices made by the cast and crew and the brilliant mind who made this production happen.

One  moment that stands out to me is the scene where Simba confronts his reflection in the water. In “Winter Light,” Ingmar Bergman discusses the concept of self-reflection as a means of confronting the complexities of human existence. Similarly, this moment in The Lion King serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of introspection and self-discovery. As Simba gazes into the water, he sees not only his own reflection but also the legacy of his father and the weight of his responsibilities. It is a moment of reckoning, a turning point in his journey towards maturity and self-acceptance. There is so much values in this
